Long Breaks

Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary 3 Nights / 4 Days

Located in Gujarat’s southern (Kathiawar) peninsula, Gir National Park’s dry deciduous forests are well known as the last refuge of the the Asiatic Lion. This subspecies of the Lion, on the brink of extinction a few decades ago, now thrives in these well protected forests and are typically easily seen in the park’s tourism zone. Gir is also well known for its healthy population of Leopard and is possibly India’s best park to observe and photograph these normally elusive cats. Other interesting mammals found in these dry forests include species like the Four-horned Antelope and Striped Hyena that are typically difficult to see in wetter forests of Peninsular India. The large park (by Indian standards) also protects a wide variety of flora and fauna, including over 250 birds, a large population of Mugger Crocodile and other representatives of both the wetter forests of peninsular India as well as arid habitats of India’s northwest.
