The great Indian hornbill (Buceros bicornis), a large, mostly frugivorous bird, occurs in mature forests throughout South India's Western Ghats.

Painted storks (Mycteria leucocephala), in the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary, near Chennai.

South India's Western Ghats are among the last remaining strongholds of the Indian elephant throughout its range.

The moist forests of the Western Ghats are noteworthy for high levels of endemism among amphibians.

Shola-grasslands, a montane ecosystem, of the Mukurthi National Park, Nilgiris. Shola-grasslands are limited to altitudes above 1700m.
